* Ashok Chawla appointed as India's Alternate Governor in World Bank
The government announced appointment of Economic Affairs Secretary Ashok Chawla as India's Alternate Governor on the World Bank board.

Chawla has been appointed India's Alternate Governor in the World Bank Board with immediate effect.

Chawla replaces Subba Rao as the latter moved on to become the Reserve Bank of India Governor.

The World Bank's member countries are represented by a Board of Governors. Each member country appoints one Governor and one Alternate Governor, in accordance with the Bank's Articles of Agreement.

Finance Minister P Chidambaram is India's Governor on the World Bank board.

The Governor and Alternate each serve a five-year term and may be re-appointed.
